An artificially intelligent toy doll M3GAN becomes self-aware when her human companion is threatened.
Director Gerard Johnstone offers a well executed and finely produced excellent addition to the genre. Produced by Jason Blum and written by Akela Cooper, with a story by James Wan and Cooper this film delivers on all fronts. It’s part Deadly Friend and the Child’s Play (remake) with a hint of The Terminator to name a few; but what sets M3GAN apart is the unique portrayal of the AI doll, which brings a fresh take on the trope.
The cast are first rate, starring likeable Allison Williams and Violet McGraw who are both solid leads. But the stars of the show are Amie Donald’s physical performance and Jenna Davis’s voice acting as memorable M3GAN.
Johnstone’s visual flair with top-notch special effects along with Wan and Cooper story deliver a good mix of dark humour, terror and thrills at pace which keeps you on the edge of your seat. At times it’s eerie, menacing and violent, carrying a spot-on warning about artificial intelligence.
Overall, a highly recommend must-see science fiction horror film, if you buy into the tongue-in-cheek tone.
