When Tom Savini did Andy Warhol‘s makeup!

In 1985, legendary makeup artist Tom Savini was contacted to create a zombie makeup for artist, film director, and producer Andy Warhol, which was photographed by Chris Makos and later appeared in one of Makos’ books on Warhol.

At this point in time Actor/SFX wizard/stuntman/director Savini had worked on a number of films including Dawn of the Dead, Friday the 13th, Creepshow and Day of the Dead, which prompted Warhol to contact him, even though they hadn’t met before.

Warhol sat patiently for the makeup until Savini went to move his hair out of the way and he gently stopped Savini’s hand, revealing that he was wearing a hairpiece taped on. Warhol was known to have liked the idea of zombies, and the Living Dead movies were in his fieldhouse, according to Makos.

Only one other person, Norman Reedus, owns a copy of the photograph, and it’s one of his favorite photos of all time.

Makos believes that Warhol would have loved people dressing up as Zombie Andy Warhol for Halloween, saying “Absolutely, for sure, he’d be OK with it.”
