Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) Review

A bounty hunter with a vagrant teenage girl goes on a mission to rescue three women stranded on a brutal planet.

Boasting a release in 3D, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone is a flawed sci-fi adventure in the wake of Mad Max" and Mad Max: Road Warrior. Similar to Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn and Space Raiders, it seems to only exist to cash in on the release of Return of the Jedi.

Lead actor Peter Strauss does his best Han Solo impression as Wolff, accompanied by the quintessential '80s sidekick Niki, played by Molly Ringwald, who progressively shines as the film encounters a plethora of sci-fi clichés, creatures, nomads, peculiar vehicles, warrior women, and a cybernetic villain portrayed by an almost unrecognizable Michael Ironside. Elmer Bernstein's music lifts the movie but feels haphazardly placed. Notable among the cast is Andrea Marcovicci as Chalmers, and the costumes, sets, matte paintings, models, and some special effects give the film the feel of a Roger Corman or Charles Band production.

Interestingly, there are a few connections to Ghostbusters, with Ivan Reitman serving as a producer and actor Ernie Hudson making an appearance, while Harold Ramis provides a voice cameo.

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone is a choppy ride, but there are intriguing visuals scattered throughout. It's worth checking out if you’re a B sci-fi fan.
