Willy's Wonderland (2021) Review

A quiet drifter is tricked into a janitorial job at the condemned Willy's Wonderland and must fight for survival against the demonic animatronics.

Director Kevin Lewis offers a well executed low budget surprisingly entertaining affair. G.O. Parsons screenplay is reminiscent of a Gravity Falls episode, the video game Five Nights at Freddy's and echos The Banana Splits’ horror movie, Child’s Play to name a few. The bizarre circumstances of why The Janitor agrees to go into Willy’s World aside, silent Nicolas Cage is on top form here.

Although derivative, only the likes of Cage (or arguably Sylvester Stallone) could pull the craziness of the plot set ups off, it just wouldn’t have the same impact without an A-lister in the lead. Cage's pinball dance gives Michael Madsen Reservoir Dogs moves a run for their money.

B-movie trappings, lapse in logic, namely the odd sex scene horror trope are off set by Lewis delivering some genuine creep visuals, not seen since Killer Klowns from Outer Space. The supporting cast are above average and all appear to be having fun the small town murder conspiracy yarn. While not as filmatic or grand as the likes of From Dusk Until Dawn, without being too presumptuous, Willy's Wonderland gore and shenanigans are destined for cult status. However, with a bigger budget it could have been a breakthrough all out genuine instant classic.

Overall, if animatronics possessed by murderers, blood guts, catchy songs and jingles is your thing, it’s a must see.
