The Curse of La Llorona (2019) Review

A mother must save her children from a malevolent spirit who is trying to steal them.

Director Michael Chaves offers a typical polished high quality Jame Wan production, packed with chills and jump scares. Loosely based on real Venezuelan folklore, the Curse of La Llorona comes late on the coat tails of other films about the weeping woman curse and a plethora of similar themed Spanish horrors.

The performances are impressive. Linda Cardellini as Anna is outstanding and offers believability along with the young cast members. Raymond Cruz is reliable. Patricia Velásquez and Marisol Ramirez as La Llorona are both notable.

The screaming and slamming of doors does become repetitive and offers little new material in terms of story. That said, the visuals and some sets ups, notably the swimming pool and flood plain are impressive. For Annabelle, The Nun and Conjuring fans this connects and expands that world mainly due to Tony Amendola’s Father Perez appearance. Who knows, maybe we’ll see The Nun versus Annabelle and Llorona in the future.

Overall, a solid well made addition, Chaves visual flare thankfully stops it becoming too tedious.
