Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021) Review

After a calamitous battle fractures Eternia and unlikely alliance must prevent the end of the Universe.

Kevin Smith offers a wonderful written series with an outstanding voice cast and fantastic animation. While the moving away from the excellent visual and design aesthetics and wonderful back grounds of the original series, it all boils down to a subjective matter of taste. Yes, I would have preferred the old look, or even the animated advert style of the 80s, but beggars can be choosers. The main thing is that we get a continuation of the the original series.

There’s plenty of nods to other media, stories, characters, comics, figures even the film; including the hover discs. It’s not self contained episodic, more serial with one episode rolling on the other. Producer Susan Corbin, Smith, Mattel Television and Powerhouse Animation Studios deliver plenty of twists, high stakes and emotional as Eternia’s magic fades. The tone is darker and slightly more adult orientated.

The voice cast is worthy of a live action film. Chris Wood, Mark Hamill, arah Michelle Gellar, Liam Cunningham and Lena Headey to name a few and bring the characters too life. It also includes voice veteran Alan Oppenheimer this time around as Moss-Man. It goes out of its way to appease fans and newcomers. The callback and references are a a joy and Bear McCreary music is fresh, but some more callback cues would have been welcomed.

Hopefully, after part 2 concludes we’ll see a series set between the original series and Revelations.

Overall, it’s not exactly what many wanted but does exactly what it’s says on the tin; injecting new life and interest to the Masters of the Universe. Highly recommended.
