The Counselor (2013) Review

A lawyer known only as “The Counselor” finds himself embroiled in a dangerous cocaine smuggling plot which turns his life upside down.

Legendary director Ridley Scot offers a grim, sordid, sleazy forgettable film. The subtle screenplay works when it’s not being over sexualised thanks to the sterling cast involved, including the likes of lead Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Brad Pit, Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem to name a few. Pit steals every scene even if they are few and far between. Bardem is on his usual fine form. Cameron shines in her serious role but needlessly is undressed as the script dictates. Veteran writer Cormac McCarth’s script feels dated, echoing an 80s erotic thriller, at times as if it wants to be a spin off to Crash (2004), being controversial for the sake of it, the overt suggestive dialogue is shoehorned in unnecessarily in almost every scene.

Overall, it has Scot’s visual flair and on location feel but even with its staged shock moments it is almost entirely forgettable, which is a pitty given the talent involved. Thankfully the cast and crew have better work under their belt.
