A virtual reality entity made up of the personalities of more than 150 serial killers escapes into the real world using a into a nano-machine android body and only ex-cop Parker Barnes can stop kidnapping and murderous rampage.
Director Brett Leonard offers a crisp production, some locations are breathtaking, even if the atmosphere is a little sterile. There’s plenty of the day vector CG along with a few effective practical SFX. It’s filled with great ideas, action setups and visuals. Eric Bernt’s screenplay has a few surprises despite a somewhat 90s clichéd setup with moments that seems to take a leaf out of The Last Action Hero (1993) trope rule book.
Despite offering weight to the novel premise Denzel Washington looks a little uncomfortable at times as Barnes; especially in the virtual world; but Russell Crowe appears to be having a blast, fittingly hamming it up as SID. William Forsythe is notable as Chief Billy Cochran.
Overall, it has a mixed tone from the performances to the set design which hampers Leonard‘s outing, but its interesting premise is enough to warrant a viewing.
