Memory (2022) Review

 An ageing hitman with early onset dementia who must go on the run after declining a contract on a young girl;

Based on the novel De Zaak Alzheimer by Jef Geeraerts and also a remake of the Belgian film, Martin Campbell adaptation delivers a wonderful shot, slick, crisp, metronome paced thriller.

The screenplay by Dario Scardapane has topical themes with a social subtext. The star studded cast lift the material including the likes of Liam Neeson as Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Harold Torres, Taj Atwal and Ray Fearon to name a few. Both Neeson and Pearce give poignant first rate performances, Bellucci shines in her limited scree time.

The on location, mostly daylight shoot gives it a unique feel. The few nighttime setups are atmospheric. As the body count increases there's a few hard hitting surprises as things heat up in the second and third act. The modest action and hitman shenanigans are finely executed and well staged.

Overall, it's a sharp crisp action thriller, while it doesn't necessarily break new ground it's better than the abundance of subpar of streaming action thrillers doing the rounds. Recommended.
