Underwater (2020) Review

A crew of oceanic researchers working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety when their deepwater facility is compromised by dangerous mysterious creatures.

Director William Eubank delivers a claustrophobic, grounded underwater thriller in the vain of Leviathan, The Abyss and Alien to name a few; with fantastic H. P. Lovecraft inspired creature designs.

The performances are first rate, Kristen Stewart shines, Vincent Cassel and T. J. Miller are memorable, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr. And Mamoudou Athie are on form. Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad's minimal dialogue along with the downbeat ending offers emotional weight, but in film, with a slight of hand there's enough wiggle room for Norah Price to return in a sequel.

The special effects, sets, with Marco Beltrami score and Eubank's visual flair offer plenty of sci-fi chills.

Overall, a must see, well made, gritty dramatic survival tale. Ticks every sci-fi claustrophobic survival box.
