Possible Spoilers
After an earthquake, an old bank vault and crypt are uncovered under an apartment block, and two estranged sisters try to survive and save their family from evil Deadites.
Written and directed by Lee Cronin, the film features a talented cast, including Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland. One of the most impressive aspects of Evil Dead Rise is the performances of the leads and the young actors. Sullivan and Sutherland both bring depth, chills and emotion to their characters. The supporting cast, which includes Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher (in her film debut), are equally impressive, adding realism and tension to the film.
While Cronin delivers nods to the original films, and even though Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell executive produce, the tone is more in line with the 2013 Evil Dead remake with The Exorcist vibes than the original trilogy or Ash vs Evil Dead. This may disappoint fans of the originals, but it does make for a more modern and intense viewing experience. With high production values, excellent gloomy cinematography from Dave Garbett, along with Bryan Shaw 's slick editing and fitting music from Stephen McKeon-it's a great ride. Rise is bloody and has dark humor, with Cronin offering eerie visuals and an interesting story structure that immediately sets up a sequel in the vein of Evil Dead 1 & 2.
Overall, Evil Dead Rise is a must-see horror film, thanks to its talented cast, intense horror action, and nods to the original series.
