Blood Surf (2000) Review

A group of 'blood surfing' friends, who spread chum in the water, to attract sharks, then film their surf come face to face with a 30 foot saltwater crocodile.

Cashing in on the success of Lake Placid (1999) this DTV outing was one of first of a number of giant croc films that followed. Director James D. R. Hickox's offering is more fun than Crocodile (2000) but not as entertaining as Crocodile 2 (2002).

Writers Sam Bernard and Robert L. Levy's usually hammily delivered script offers illogical wackiness, with modern pirates, teenagers and a salty captain. The effects are a mixed bag, puppets, subpar CGI, but the large practical Crocodile is actually impressive. Tziporah Malkah (credited as Kate Fischer) is notable, along with the on location scenery.

Don't expect Alligator (1980), Lake Placid, or even Crocodile 2, it's clunky, cheesy and over the top but it may go down well if you're in the right B-film mood.
