The Sisters Brothers (2018) Review

Brothers and assassins find themselves on a journey across the Northwest in 1851 on an adventure that tests their blood and loyalty.

Based on The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt, director Jacques Audiard offers one of the best westerns to find the screen in recent memory. All the actors play against type cast and edgy Joaquin Phoenix, memorable Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed put in sterling performances. John C. Reilly is particularly notable here in a serious role. The late Rutger Hauer also cameos as the Commodore.

With high production values, there's fitting music, wonderful scenery and sets as the hired assassins Eli and Charlie Sisters go from town to town to rendezvous with John Morris who is holding Hermann Warm a man with a secret. The Sisters Brothers has all you'd expect from the genre but goes in unexpected emotional ways, with some great character interactions and arcs.

Overall, a witty fine looking western, with some heavy drama. Recommend.
